Hestia has its roots into the Regulatory
and Statistical Returns System, which is
used for filing housing returns. The application
developed was simple but robust system that
could operate under dual modes – online
and offline, and at the same time be stable
enough to handle a huge user-base spread
across vast geographic locations.
Development roadblocks here included system
speed and performance parameters given the
humungous data involved. This coupled with
the requirement of minimal connection duration
i.e. time for which a user needs to be online
while transacting, called for a thoroughly
fine-tuned system design. Prior to designing
the system, a research and study phase was
conducted by the team which took into account
a number of technology options as well as
implementation approaches. Only after careful
considerations of speed, performance and
other system level constraints, technologies
to be used and the most optimized development
approach was decided.
The development phase was carried out very
systematically under tight timelines and
with an eye for speed optimization. In terms
of testing, effective error and recovery
measures were handled under various scenarios
so as to ascertain and ensure the system
does not give way under immense data loads.
Hestia was delivered in six months and
considering its relatively small development
team of 4 – a manager, 2 developers
and 1 QA engineer, it has raised our benchmark
in terms of productivity, performance, delivery
and customer satisfaction parameters. |
